Roadtrip Oregon & Idaho: Three Generations

Our destination, Benny's home in Idaho (just outside of Boise in a town called Nampa). Grandma and her family all grew up in Idaho. I learned a lot about my family on this trip and met many relatives for the first time too.

I adore this great-uncle of mine. He's my Grandma's 90 year-old brother. Aren't they the cutest siblings? They get along great too.

Trunk Show Jacksonville, Oregon

Last week I flew to Oregon to spend time with my Mom in her new home of Jacksonville. We had many adventures. One of which was this jewelry and painting trunk show. I was too busy to get photos when we had guests, but made sure to get some pictures of the set-up before everyone arrived.

A Carny's Dream Home

This amazing home, designed by Lawrence Joseph in the Storybook Style was built between 1946-1970.

In 1996 it was declared as an Historical-Cultural monument. As well it should, it has been inspiring me for over a week!

The current residents gave me a little tour of the amazing grounds the other day and I took so many photographs. All of the little nooks and cranny's were just irresistible and the work and detail that went into the building and design of the place was fascinating.

For example, all of the interior furniture is built-in like on a ship and all hand-made. There was even a little sketch drawing in the garage of a guy building the bedroom bureaus! I did not see much of the interior, but the outside was amazing and awe inspiring enough. No nails- can you imagine?

Missing My Mom

I'm missing my Mom so much lately. She is on a new journey and has moved to Jacksonville, Oregon. Jacksonville really sounds like her kind of place and it is rated a one of the top small cities in the US to live in! It is steeped in interesting history and she is even living in the Victorian home of none other than Bozo the Clown. Bizarre? It is said that there is a ghost, either his mother or his sister. My Mom has already had some strange experiences, but thankfully the ghost seems to be a friendly prankster. Can you believe she moved in on Halloween? She's one brave lady, not sure I would be able to do that.

Long In Absentia

Dear Friends,

I sincerely apologize for not blogging of late. I am in Telluride, Colorado teaching summer school art. It is a wonderful opportunity that I have been taking advantage of for the past 6 years and I need to dedicate myself to it 100% - thus the lack of posts.

The small town of Telluride is filled with many outdoors activities, wonderful restaurants and interesting people. I am working weekdays from 8:30 - 4:30 with the exception of last weeks inordinately long hours until 7:30 plus a Saturday spent in two private lessons.

This coming Saturday I am having a jewelry trunk show at the local store Two Skirts where I have been wholesaling for 6 years now. The show is August 8 from 1-4pm, if you're in town please do stop in!

The night before the big Farm Chicks event, Rebekah and I could hardly wait to meet up with our friends and fellow bloggers. Unfortunately, I didn't get pictures of the 14 or so girls we first met up with in the lovely Peacock bar of our hotel (I know, what was I thinking?) Actually I was so overwhelmed by all the beautiful and interesting women I couldn't be bothered to take pictures I guess. Luckily I did later on when we went over to the beautiful Barn House Boys and Queen and King of Tarte's hotel down the street!

This is my dear friend Cindy from Queen of Tarte. I know her from my Mom and my Annual Art and Antique sales we used to have in Salem, Oregon. She is the inspiration for my blog and has also been a big supporter of my art. I adore her!

Here's Rebekah and I still feeling the effects of some random roadside diner poison (it's a long story).

Some Inspirations From My Travels

All of these images come from a store called Home Economics located in Grants Pass, Oregon where my Mom and I stopped on our drive to visit my Grandparents. The man who owns the store is so creative and has such a trained eye for everything rustic. I love the old typewriters, paint brushes, bottles and maps. The destination signs for Europe are his new venture and he was at the Alameda flea market selling these when we visited - they are really wonderful pieces of art. I was hoping to meet him as he is a true inspiration. My Mom told me he does book art which I am preparing to do myself and since he doesn't sell his art I wasn't able to see any at this time darn it. I'd give a website, but even that he doesn't seem to have. All his creativity was just overwhelming and I'm pretty sure my pictures don't do his space justice, but hopefully you get the general idea!

Visiting Grandma and Grandpa

After a wonderful time visiting my Mom and Greg in Ashland it was time for a drive North to see my Grandparents. Here are a few shots from that visit.

They have a wonderful dog named Jackie and a cat named Pearl (not pictured here) as well as all these amazing Peacock's that have been showing up lately. I think we counted 8 peacock's at one time.

Their home is out in the country surrounded by fields and farmland so it is really idyllic. They are having various health difficulties, but I can see why they prefer to have help 24hrs. a day in their own home as opposed to assisted living. My Grandma is still so full of spirit and a pleasure to be around. My Mom, Grandma and I had a really fun day taking her for a pedicure and doing a little shopping. We laugh a lot together and I wish I could get up to see them more often. We did make the most of this trip though and I was so glad to spend quality time with family.

Next, my Mom and I are off to see my best girlfriend Rebekah (whom most of you know as little byRD vintage of course) in Portland, Oregon so stay tuned!

Here is my lovely mom, Peggy, in her happy yellow room in Ashland, Oregon. This is the beginning of my adventures that have kept me from blogging. Hopefully over the next several entries you'll see it was well worth it!

I'm feeding the wild deer in my Mom and Greg's (her special man) backyard. They are blessed with all types of wildlife from lots of deer, squirrels, many varieties of birds and even the occasional bear - YIKES!

Ashland is known for the Shakespearean festival, natural foods, liberal thinking and I believe, extremely warm and friendly people. My Mom above at the local Farmer's Market.

This is such a cute little shop in Ashland, Oregon. I'm such a sucker for black and white awnings - someday I'll have one too.

My Mom loves to water all her outdoor plants (even though they have a sprinkler system). She's just a very nurturing kind of gal.

So Zen

Whew, after the past couple of weeks worth of image overload I've had to take a little moment to zen out before sharing all the delightful adventures I've been on.

The rest of my afternoon will be spent organizing more of the over 800 photos I took on my trip to Ashland, Jefferson, and Portland, Oregon as well as Spokane, Washington and everything in between.

I hardly knew where to start after my return Monday evening and just needed a little time to unpack, do errands and the usual domestic stuff that piles up while we're away. Not to mention we'll be leaving for Wisconsin late this evening.

I took this morning to zen out a bit with a good book. This photo of a cairn was amongst the pictures I took in Ashland, Oregon. That's where my Mom lives and if you haven't been ,I urge you to go. It is a wonderful small town right near the border of Oregon and California and is full of culture (best known for the Shakespearean festival every year).

Over the next couple of weeks I will be posting my photos and stories of the trip so I hope you'll join me in the adventure!

Oh and my lack of posting sometimes disgusts me, but I hope you, my friends, will hang in there. Keep in mind I have been out gathering lots of inspiration and I tend to work compulsively when inspired and not so much when not. What can I say? I've got to be me!

I love old mini garbage pails - I would keep my dog food in this!

I found this old iron table to be most unique and would like it for our porch.

I'm into putting light-weight coverlets draped over our bed - this one was elegant, but unfortunately only a twin!

This is the one table that would really look nice in our place, but we don't have a spot available darn it!

I love birds and have a soft spot for old iron or wood bird cages - this one is big enough to put our little dog Ophie in! I doubt very much that she would enjoy that though.

I'll continue taking snap shots of the stuff that got away (and thankfully at that). This way I can share my finds with you all without having to go broke in the process. Not to mention save some room in our home to actually walk around!

No real story to go with this entry. Last weekend the weather was agreeable and the flea was great - I sold two paintings even! I didn't however take many photos so these are a result of a few weeks ago when I was trying to be artsy - not a major success, but fun nevertheless. Tomorrow I've got several new paintings to take and the weather is supposed to be 81º - won't that be fantastic. Sorry for skipping last weeks entry, but I required some hibernation time.

Sunday At The Flea

I'm so happy I got lots of pictures at the flea last weekend as tomorrow's weather looks to be very dreary - rain, high winds and perhaps even thunder/ lightening! Yuck.

Aren't these pretty scarves? It reminds me of my own collection displayed in clear 1950's plastic boxes in our closet. Most people just toss the scarves in a pile or in a box, but this sweet regular seller really takes her time by laundering, pressing, the whole works. She is also known for her dyed slips and beautiful sewing. I wish I would have gotten her information...next time.

Here's a clever transformation for a broken chair or bench - great if you have the space or a yard preferably. I don't, thus the photos. My "thing" lately is to take snaps of things I want, think are ridiculous (see the doll head below), could be cool (see the doll head below), can't possibly take home (or my husband would beat me), think I want but don't necessarily want in the next hour or even think I need, but learn I can live without.

It's all part of my personal downsizing program which I think, in light of the times and financially speaking, is working out to be quite fortuitous (did I mention I've been practicing this plan for the past decade?) O.K. so I'm not too good at saying "no" to the next great deal or irresistible nic-nak. The problem for me is a small condo that we simply adore, but is already nicely appointed. Perhaps furniture replacements on occasion, upgrading always is smart if you happen along something just perfect, but more space-fillers I DO NOT NEED to bring home. In fact, it is some of these wonderful, but simply decorative items that I take and sell each week at the market along with my paintings and soon a selection of my less-expensive jewelry.

While you can find examples of the necklaces I have available at my etsy store or on my website, I have also started a blog exclusively directed at showcasing new jewelry and eventually paintings as well (that way I can use Brooke Ahana Daily to ramble on like this!). Studio Ophelia is just geared toward the art I make and the inspirations for it. Seriously though, I don't know why but I really like this doll head! Do you think it will be there tomorrow? Don't you hate it when you pass something up then can't stop thinking about it - I hope you know I'm only half kidding about this head. It seriously could be the perfect part of one of my collages (so far they are only in my head unfortunately).

I was really attracted to these bright, happy displays of funky gems yesterday at the Sunday Flea. It was another fun day there where I unloaded yet more unwanted items. The Fabulous Fleamarket

Last weekend I sold at the market, but I had the buying bug too and couldn't resist this wonderful circa 70's carpet bag! I love the colors, the elegance, the two interior pockets and the little brass feet on the bottom. You just can't find these in such great shape usually. I would much rather carry a unique vintage bag like this than any of the big name designer bags these days. You can't compete with the prices either - this little gem only cost $30.

This is my friend Sara. Johnny and I call her English Sara since we have a few friends named Sara and she's got a great English accent. I hadn't seen or heard from her in many months so what a pleasure to see her and her son Jacob (that's him below with Dallas and I).

This is Carol who sells the most lovely clothing and jewelry - all exquisite and vintage. She is usually set up right across from Glen and I. Her and I have done yoga together on occasion as well.

Margaret, pictured above, specializes in vintage handbags, shoes,belts and boots. She has such a kind heart and is always a pleasure to chat with. Below is my friend Jose who is a fellow painter and sells larger furniture at the market every Sunday.

This is my little table of goodies. Throughout the day it gets re-merchandised as I sell. Last Sunday was pretty successful so most of what you see here has now gone on to new homes.

Glen is my sweet friend and fellow painter. He has been doing so good with his work and has even branched his pop style into commissions. Below is an example and these people are recognized in the film industry I believe, so we made sure to get lots of photos for his portfolio. I try to help him with writing his bio/artists statement and taking pictures and printing them for him when I can. He helps me by sharing his flea market space every week - we have the best spot in the whole market (at least we think so).

Renato's Visit

This week I was lucky enough to have a visit from one of my dear friends, Renato. We used to work together, but now he and his partner live in Palm Springs so I don't have the pleasure of seeing him as often. When he comes to town we always go visit friends and then go out to eat. This was his first time meeting Ophelia and of course she just loved him! He also took this nice little family photo of us. The next time we hope to go visit them in Palm Springs for the weekend. His partner Rick is an interior designer so their condo is just beautiful.

A while back...

...we were lucky enough to spend the weekend with one of my dearest friends Matthew who lives in San Diego. We went to pick up a dresser that he and his Aunty B were kind enough to bring home from Lake Tahoe for us.

This was Ophelia's first weekend getaway and what a perfect weekend it was, not an accident in the house and a good girl all around (no big surprise there). The sun was shining, it wasn't too hot and of course (as usual) Matthew was the perfect host!

We drank delicious margaritas, ate burritos and attempted a movie - I fell asleep as usual and so did Enrique. He had a much better excuse having traveled from Mexico City on little or no sleep. This trip was extra special in order to be able to see him as well.

We wandered around the next day and leisurely enjoyed a late lunch and stroll around this great park where people (artists or groups of artists) decorated huge globes. Of course, idiot that I am I have only posed shots of the 5 of us! I am making it my goal to improve my "eye" for taking pictures.

I Can't Believe It! I've been tagged.

I'm not exactly thrilled either as I've been enjoying my hermit-like state of late, but my sweet and concerned friend Little Byrd thinks she's helping to motivate me so here goes, 7 "Random" facts:

1. Most days I spend reading. Sometimes I just go from book to book consuming 1 or 2 a day. The other day I was trying to remember anything about the book before the one I was currently engrossed in and I couldn't! I've always been a reader, but this is more than normal even for me and I think it might be my way of "getting through" this economic crises/ meltdown the world is suffering. If I don't leave my porch or home then I don't spend any money.

2. I consider myself a pretty stellar sales person and did quite well working in a strictly commission environment on Rodeo Drive. For the life of me I cannot seem to sell my own jewelry and art work. The necklaces I create are wonderful and I do love to wear them so sometimes that helps. These accidental sales really make up the mainstay for me - just think what I could accomplish if I just got away from my mountain of books and went "a selling"?

3. I have been having really intense and disappointing dreams lately - lots of anxiety. During the day I can't figure out why since I feel pretty good. Can we say escapism????

4. My husband and I are addicted to "LOST" - it is so good! I got into it first after watching the entire first season in one sitting (overnight when J was out of town). I told him and he thought for sure I'd "lost" my marbles then he promptly became a fellow enthusiast after just one episode of season two.

5. I'm not sure I can think of seven things which makes me say I'm so fortunate this isn't one of those "25 things about me" tags (I'd have to get even with you on that Rebekah). Did I say how much I've been loathing the blog writing these days and that this is not inspiring me at all. 6. What I am inspired about are my Sunday flea market days. Now that is fun times to be had, sales to make, junk to get rid of and most importantly, IMMEDIATE GRATIFICATION!!! None of this Etsy B.S. when I'm just watching and waiting and hoping then giving up entirely. Even though I spend a lot of time alone and loving it, the Sunday market for me is socializing at its very best. I have lots of fellow flea sellers that I adore and there are so many interesting customers both regulars and new or out-of-staters (always so interesting). I love to people-watch and there is a plethora of that to be had at the market.

7. I am madly in love with my husbamd and we have the most comfortable, yet romantic relationship I could ever have dreamed of. Each and every day I give thanks for this and try to tell him often how much I appreciate him. We recently got a puppy and her name is Ophelia. Right now she completes our little family, but at the same time I can see just what a wonderful set of parents we would make - no telling what the future holds... So that about sums it up!

We just got a puppy! Johnny took these adorable photos of her and I couldn't wait to post them.

Her name is Ophelia - we call her "Ophie" too. She loves her new home and we love her so much. She has such a happy, friendly way about her. Loves everyone, dogs, cats, children ...

She's just 4 months old and I took her for her first Vet appointment yesterday which went really well. We hope to take her with us for Christmas in Wisconsin.

Based on how much she loved the sand yesterday, I really hope she can go with us to see the snow and run and play with abandon. I've never had a better early Christmas present!

Here's the Rundown:

This past weekend my sweet friend Rebekah came for a visit.

Despite the turmoil of our house (just had the drywall put in after the flood incident of two months ago), Johnny (he's so good to me) and I made a nice cozy nest and cleaned the dust till late last Wednesday evening in preparation. I would have liked to surprise Rebekah with a swank hotel stay for the three nights, but alas we were almost never home and this ended up working out for the best. I'm lucky to have such an easygoing and inspirational friend who could "rough it" for the few days. The next time she comes for a visit everything should be back to normal! I hope she'll bring her husband and little boy too.

Here are a few pictures from our adventures. Some items that "got away" (there weren't many) at the local Melrose Trading Post Flea Market (my weekly haunt), Rebekah (photogenic and adorable as ever) on one of my favorite streets of boutiques Abbott Kinney, the bizarre Sunset at Dockweiler Beach (caused in part by the fires here), our journey up Runyon Canyon before we took a wonderful yoga class (also my weekly ritual) and last, but not least the fabulous bracelet she made me for my Birthday!

Oh Deer!

It has been nearly two months since I've updated here at Brooke Ahana Daily.

I haven't been idle, on the contrary, there have been vacations (Vegas and Wichita, Kansas), work in our home (ugh, never ending), preparations for a big December art and jewelry show (more to come) and a visit from my darling friend Rebekah (see her blog).

I sort of had to go underground for what I'm hoping was preparation for an extremely productive period for me. I've been busy making new jewelry and binging on supplies to replace my rapidly depleting supply (think rosaries, medallions, vintage chain and other odds and ends that I like to incorporate into my necklaces and bracelets).

I've received plenty of pressure (Rebekah and the dear sweet Barn House Boys). I have to say it was just the encouragement I needed to come out of hiding.

You can expect me to pick up, not so much where I left off, but with 2-3 entries weekly on what I'm doing on the art and design front! "Daily" blogging just isn't for me at this point with the upcoming show, perhaps in the not so distant future...

Our poor condo!

Here I am a couple weeks ago when we had to have these guys come in to dry out our place after we were flooded by the girl above us. This is a pretty common occurrence in condo living, but boy what an inconvenience. Then there is the whole mess of sorting it out through insurance - we are still waiting to find out what our insurance will pay out (then they should get reimbursed through her insurance). So last weekend when they were running heavy duty fans and dehumidifiers 24hrs.-a-day for 4 days we went to the Chamberlain Hotel for two nights. It was 89º in our place and frankly we couldn't take it any more. Whew, what a great little mini vacation we had - and right after a lovely time in Hawaii. Currently we're living with lots of our bamboo flooring torn up and gaping holes in our walls and ceiling so we will be quite happy when things move ahead with the fixing up.

This is my excuse for being lax in the blogging and I apologize.

On a positive note I just received several jewelry pieces from the guy who does my casting and I'm pleased to say they turned out great - will post more on that in the next week!

...saying goodbye is never easy and it was with a wonderful send off party that we at AhHaa School said our goodbyes until next Summer hopefully. After this it was up to the mountain Village where Taj Mahal gave a free concert - glorious weather and good friends there as well. Last night I watched a wonderful and inspiring documentary film about a fifth grade teacher in Rye, New York. His name was Albert Cullum and his style and grace brought me to tears. I won't give each and every aspect of the movie away, instead make a point of seeing it whether you are a teacher, parent or not for the man is an inspiration to us all. The black and white footage shot by Robert Downey SR. and woven throughout the poignant interviews is also a bonus.

Saturday I had an impromptu Trunk Show for my necklaces at Two Skirts here in Telluride. It was lots of fun and very successful for the little advertising I did. Here are a couple of pictures.

Here are some of my favorite summer in Telluride women. Robin on the far left also lives in New Orleans where she was so kind to give me a Trunk Show at her gorgeous home. Tricia, Amy and Krista (left to right) all live in Houston, Texas - they are all so fun too! Sutton, the blondie on the end, is my go-to gal at Two Skirts here in Telluride - she grew up in this beautiful place and has a good eye for what necklaces will sell. They already sold one from their reorder last week so she's one smart cookie!

Quite a while ago I started a dream journal that sad to say I've not been too good at keeping up. Just in the nick of time however (yesterday) a package arrived from Johnny and in it, my journal.

You see, I've been having some very interesting and epic dreams of late. Last night was no exception. I woke up feeling not so much refreshed, but like....hmmm joining community theater!

Do you ever have one of those dreams that you wake up from and think "that was so brilliant it ought to be made into a movie!" This wasn't one, but it was pretty darn peculiar and entertaining nonetheless. Last night I was starring as a reflective, albeit grumpy, old guy living in Canada and reflecting on life with his old buddy!

There are lots of other, various characters and since there are only three or four actors total we are doubling up on roles. Another crucial role in the play (definitely a drama, but with some spots of humor) is a centipede-like worm, bug thingy. We are at a loss as to how to create this because it costs $560 to rent one that one of our actors saw in another play. All kinds of brainstorming goes into the ideas to make this costume and I don't spend much time preparing for my own crucial role.

We've no time for dress rehearsals until the day of the opening. There is a child actor as well and I know he too has not prepared for his role and learned his lines. I am not at all worried about myself because I've decided the writer of the play is a total boob and has missed out in developing my character and that I will adlib in such a way as to slightly, if not completely alter the play to become more of a positive story and one in which my character actually shows some growth. In fact I've even decided that throughout the 4 or so acts my character will stand a little straighter and get a little less gray to mirror his improved attitude.

I do speak to the director about my change of lines and plans to improv . Surprisingly he is extremely supportive and in agreement. I detest my fellow actor, also a woman, playing my old time buddy. She is a dullard if I've ever seen one and I just know if I don't stick to the script there'll be a milky blank look emanating from her eyes (what's new)- dear god she is just perfect playing this senile old fart come to think of it. I'm beginning to have one of those inner stuggles as well that I may be over acting it, changing the intents of the author too much. Then there is the anxiety prevalent all around actors and crew alike that we've tried to pull-off a play in the matter of a week or something ridiculous. Still, I have this sense, up until I wake up promptly at 6:30 am as if some alarm has gone off, that the play was going to be a resounding success. Therefore, I am ready to join community theater! Well maybe I wouldn't go that far now that I'm actually pretty awake, but it did inspire me to think what our dreams can prompt us to do or not to do!

I've decided to tag my dear friend Rebekah of littlebyrd to tell us her most memorable dream! Ha, ha, ha I told you I'd get you back for that last tag! Aren't you proud of me? I just woke up with this brilliant plan.

Touring Telluride Day 1

We're off to a wonderful start of my third week of classes here in Telluride! This weeks classes are called "Touring Telluride" and are a multi media journalling class of our favorite sights of this beautiful town. There are two groups, a morning and afternoon of three hours each. The morning class has 7 -9 year olds and the afternoon is 4 - 6 year olds. This is a photo taken by one of the students named Owen who is only 5 years old! I think he did a really good job of capturing my assistant Piedra and I relaxing at break with Ben. Ben just turned 4 and is the youngest in our class and he has a great personality - the perfect sweet boy with just a touch of naughty that I love!

So I've got a weakness.

Despite knowing that adding anything of the dairy variety to coffee makes it into a "poison", I simply cannot help it. To me it is like a dessert. Normally I do the regular half n' half, but yesterday I thought I'd buy a new variety of one of my other guilty pleasures.

So this morning, as I tore off the inner protective seal of the non-dairy creamer and licked it, I knew it was love at first lick. I mean really, I could drink this stuff straight. Oh help me! I thought the coconut was good, but this.....well it takes me right to ecstasy, I mean Italy. What did I expect? It's made by Nestle for goodness sake (pun intended)...I mean they specialize in candy. That's what this stuff is, liquid candy and by golly I'm off now to see how it holds up in coffee!

Have a lovely and relaxing Sunday - I'll be here in Telluride, gazing up on mountains and waterfalls while sipping deluxe coffee. Life is good.

Mysterious Media - Week2

This is the 7 -9 year group at our Big Art Show!

Here are the 9-12 year old's celebrating our final day. This is always the bittersweet day for these four-day classes, we are operating at full steam ahead and could be easily be creating for several more days at this point!

I had such a fun week with these two groups. With four more weeks to go I am both encouraged and excited to see what will be created.

Tomorrow I have just one class called "Designer Digs" and will be sure to get lots of photos of works in progress as well as their final projects!

I also have an adult class on Thursday evenings (which explains the late-night blogging) and my lovely and talented students are making me feel so lucky and proud - I am so lucky!

Here's last Fridays Wild Wire creations.

I'm pretty darn proud of my students from week 1 at Ah Haa and now after a couple days into week 2 I'm pretty excited to share their projects later this week.

This weeks classes are called Mysterious Media and boy are we coming up with some terrific projects. The kids have access to tons of materials and even go to the "Free Box" daily looking for inspiration and treasures.

Incidentally, it is at this "Free Box" here in Telluride that I found a wonderful Miu Miu purse and my Mom once scored a cashmere wrap - it is such fun to see what can be found there on a daily basis, kind of addicting. It's also important to donate unwanted items there and I always do that during my last few days in Telluride.

I had such a nice, relaxing weekend and even took a little hike. I will be sure to post those photos in the next couple of days as well as more pictures from classes and hopefully my own work that I've been busy creating.

This is the group of 7 - 9 year-olds and it is a much smaller group than the little ones I have in the morning. Since they are older and there are fewer students, they have been really great little self-starters and can navigate the art studio on their own.

Thoughts on Comments, New Art, Kids Becoming Responsible

Have you ever wondered why people don't respond to you after you have left them a comment on a blog entry? I mean, isn't the whole purpose to encourage and support one-another in this big technologically, ever-expanding thing called cyberspace where we are so very communicative about our tastes, our doings, our to-do's and of course our done that's? Now I think I know what happens because...

...I'm overwhelmed right now and can't possibly keep up with everyone's kind comments and support, but I'm here to let you know I appreciate you. You know who you are and those that are new here can see them listed to the right under "These Talented People". Please also know that I'm watching what you're doing too and haven't lost interest in the least. You will hear from me at your blog soon!

Here it is only day two of summer art, but I'm a little exhausted. I'm also thinking that the whole 9000 feet altitude thing coming from sea level can really take the wind out of your sails so I've got to pace myself - not the easiest goal when working with 12 4-6 year olds I assure you!

I treat the students (any age) like the little artists they are. They are learning some new responsibilities which helps make my job and the job of my assistants smoother. I have to say though, these kids are all so well mannered and come from such nice homes (you should see their snacks - yummy). My job these days is by no means difficult, but it is involved to the extreme and that can be taxing. So once again bare with me, it's all I can do to attempt a daily greeting!

Art Extravaganza Day 1

Good Morning! Here is about half of my am class of Funny Faces (portrait paintings and beyond of course). These students are between 4-6 years old. They did such a good job on their first day! Here we are walking back from the town park where we had our snacks.

We even made a new friend - he was so excited and loved the children so much he went pee-pee on my leg! Just a puppy, but the personality was wonderful. Probably the friendliest Daschund I've ever come across - he is being raised by a little girl so that's why he loved the kids so much. Now I really want a dog, maybe a few kids too! I've been blessed with two wonderful classes to start off the summer season - I'm so lucky!

I totally don't pick favorite students - just favorite photos. This is Lara and she looks just like her painting I think. She's a return student and about to turn 10 yrs. old so she was in my afternoon class. The afternoon class is full of students from previous years and we're already comfortable and in creative mode - Look out, here we come!

I took a very long break out of shear frustration dealing with the tragic loss of my hard drive, but I've finally returned with renewed vigor - hopefully. My plan is to showcase some recent paintings. I've at least been busy creating and getting ready for my summer teaching in Telluride, Colorado at the AhHaa School.

I am leaving on a 6:30 am flight tomorrow and classes begin Monday morning at 9 am! I'll have plenty of great pictures and stories to tell about my sweet students so please tune in next week.

I have had a momentary set back in the world of Apple computers.

I still have a small glimmer of hope that I will be able to retrieve the data lost when my computer suddenly "couldn't find" my hard drive, but I'm otherwise in a state of suspended blogging.

I have lost so much, but luckily have my music and photos on my I-pod. Wish I could say the same for the countless contacts I had saved in my email program, the beginning of a book idea, the carefully worded class descriptions and supplies lists for my summer teaching in Telluride, and I could go on and on, but I don't want to bore you silly.

This makes me realize the nearly irrational reliance I have developed on all things technological. I am by no means a computer wizard, but this catastrophy was hardly my fault. Is Mercury in retrograde or what? My cell phone battery has been running out in record time as well - I thought that was an inconvenience, little did I know that this would happen...

I will not dwell for now, but if any of you want to send me an email , I'd really appreciate adding to my address book (it is seriously lacking due to the program I used).

I'm sure all of you are much more savvy than me, but just in case please back-up your data right now, do not wait. I was just days away from this very act and it makes me sick I didn't take the bull by the horns. I believe in reasons for everything so perhaps even this will have it's "Silver Lining".

I'll be battling my techno disaster for a few days and surely have all kinds of fun posts upon return. Please don't give up on me just yet.

Art and Antiques Shows of the Past...

Here is my Mom's old home in South Salem, OR.

It is here that we had our annual Art and Antiques Show.

Today my dear friend Rebekah did a wonderful blog entry on our shows and it brought back such nice memories. Check out Rebekah's wonderful blog and Etsy's!

I'm still creating art and selling vintage finds as is my Mom who lives in Ashland, OR now with her wonderful boyfriend Greg. She has a space in a local antique mall and just recently I spoke with her as she was rushing to put more stuff in as she'd nearly sold out! It's a good thing she has a storage unit full to the brim with more fabulous vintage finds.

Ever since I was a little girl my Mom has been furnishing our home with wonderful flea market and thrift store finds (as well as garage sales and estate sales). She has a fabulous eye and I think she's passed it down to me. I'm encouraging her to eventually have a store in Ashland - I know she'd be very good at that, but right now she enjoys the freedom having a space in a mall allows.

Here we are after the sale of that lovely home.
We are on our way, in a huge rented U-Haul, to LA
where I live. Our plan was to sell lots of vintage
at the Melrose Trading Post and sure enough it was
a successful trip for her. I had such fun with my Mom
in my element in LA too! She of course fit right in and to
this day - 2 years later people still ask how she's doing
and tell me how wonderful she is. As if I don't know it!

W.I.W. Reborn #4

This is a two-piece jersey outfit that I found at a local thriftstore - I've paired it with a vintage alligator belt. This is such a great and easy outfit to travel with. It takes up virtually no space and doesn't wrinkle. Makes me think back to those early Diane Von Furstenberg dresses she became so known for. I just don't believe the jersey's of today are as fabulous so finding this little number really pleased me!

Fabulous Finds Installment #5

This will be my last blog until Monday! We're going to San Diego for the weekend to be with our friends Matthew, Doug and Rod! Sunday we'll be going to a flea market - oh goody!

A wonderful flea market find - small folding metal table - so handy and versatile. Here's a couple of views:

What a great patina!

Rrrrrr! This is so very hot - I already carried it once and am not sure I can part with it.

A couple of man-bags for my hubby that I found at a local estate sale - I really made out good at that one - be on the lookout next week for more finds from that!

I especially liked how worn-in these bags were. I didn't plan on keeping them and bought them for resale, but alas what Johnny wants Johnny gets!

This is my favorite kind of find - it was free! I picked this off a tree that was literally dripping in the wonderful chartreuse-green moss that you pay big money for here in LA. I'm afraid my photo doesn't do it justice, but this stuff is seriously bright! My Mom and I loaded up on moss when I was visiting her in Ashland and we arranged hers in a clear vase with a pinecone she picked up on the trail - I'd love to share some of those pictures as well (from my trip) if she'd ever send me the disk (are you reading this Mom?).

Fabulous Finds Installment #4

So, a lot of you have been asking when/ if I'm going to start offering my "Fabulous Finds" for sale on etsy. The answer is yes, but right now I'm sort of "stockpiling" as many items as possible. I'm enjoying photographing them and positioning them all over the house as well. This process of mine is also known as procrastinating. I'm a very hard-working procrastinator. I was just thinking lately that I enjoy aimlessly junking and scavenger-hunting simply to avoid doing anything truly productive. Well, that all has to change as "J" and I find less and less room for our selves in our little condo. I do believe it will be a win-win situation for all involved! In the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact me through this blog or my etsy if you want to snap anything up before-hand!

I purchased this cute little rustic wire fruit, soap, etc. basket recently on my trip to Oregon. I'm enjoying it's function as well as it's form!

I have a weakness for advertising and glass - this was found at a garage sale in Ashland, Or. It is cute!

Indoor terrariums are a great and easy little project. I added a little sprig of Bromeliad, Spanish Moss (also from the Bromeliad family and not moss at all!), and a weathered piece of wood that I actually found and was given at an Estate sale recently. These glass terrariums are easy to find for .49¢ - .99¢ at any local thriftstore (except of course if you want to find them).

Another nice look is a terrarium filled with a little sand and some pretty shells with a plant. The options are endless and the key is that they are very easy to care for and look delightful!

This weathered old yellow chair has some great details and looks good indoors or outdoors.Unfortunately, it's not the look for our city condo - it would be great in the beach house we don't have just yet. Is a beach house too much to long for? Course not, but it's a little early to start collecting furnishings for it. Consequently this little yellow gem is for sale in two weeks at the Melrose Trading Post! Incidentally, I purchased it there a few weeks ago for $1.00... hopefully no potential buyers are reading this!

This is a nifty 60's or 70's era bowl - I think they are fabric coated in resin - I love the colors. This is available for purchase - only $12.00 plus shipping.

This dress flew off my rack two weeks ago at Melrose, but I couldn't help posting a photo of it. I like this shade of purple and would've definitely kept it, but it was too large for me. I love the label too of course - not that it is uniquely designed, but it says California-Hawaii and looks like it was a spendy dress. Someone got a real bargain from me !

Fabulous Finds Installment #3

$1.00 - need I say more?

I love wearing this new-found vintage treasure from I.Magnin! It looks so cute with my stacked high, black heels.

A very red-white-blue nautical and American theme here! The scarves are both Vera and the shoes, purse and sunglasses have all just recently sold. Looking at this photo makes me miss them a little already!

I couldn't resist this old Cheese Cookbook - I've got plans to make art from old, linen-covered hard-backed books, but in the meantime we've enjoyed having this on our coffee table to enjoy. My husbands family has a cheese factory in Wisconsin so it seemed very apropos.

These will help nicely with my organizational plans - don't laugh, they are serious plans.

Someone is a very good painter, but didn't sign his or her work! I couldn't resist this as a potentially integral piece in a future artwork.

I already sold this fabulous wool jacket - would've kept it if it weren't too big for me. Then there is the whole issue of a tiny closet...

I adore old labels in vintage clothing!

Fabulous Finds Installment #2

Let's see if you can guess why I grouped all of these items into one installation of "Finds."

Three adorable stacking Japanese light-weight bowls.

Here's another irresistible print - this is the cutest little jacket, perfect condition and I'd estimate from 50's or 60's perhaps. I do believe I'll be wearing this in the Fall!

This small vase is hand-painted and beautiful! It is marked "Fujita Kutani" and Trade Mark Made in Japan on the bottom in red. Not sure if it is obvious in the photo, but there is a wonderful gold paint detailing - I think this was an expensive vase and will have to do some research...

I just love mu'u mu'u's - it must be my Hawaiian heritage. In fact, I'm going to bring back the mu'u mu'u! I've already picked out a gorgeous form-hugging one to wear to my cousins Hawaii wedding in September. This one above has such beautiful colors and I'd wear it, but it is about a size 8 or 10 - it will find it's way onto etsy soon...

Here are a few items that I liked photographed as a group. The shoes are indeed circa 60's and they are mine and I love them and will never part with them. My Mom found them up in Oregon at some junk store or other. She gave me a silver pair as well, but they weren't as comfy so she has them now. What is so special about these shoes is that they are cut better than any I've found today and they have a 1/4" heel that helps make them last longer than other flats (plus it's better on the back). Lastly, they are so soft and flexible -almost like bedroom slippers.

The green Bakelite bracelets are also mine - I have a small collection started. Also, the silk flower I use every now and then to keep a lace blouse I made together.

The scarves are for sale and so is the adorable little 1980's leather and snake purse - it is suede lined and a nice little size for evenings. The chunky gold chain and the pearl and gold-toned charm are also part of my future "store."

A Cute Sign Gets Some Function

As a true aesthete I am forever finding myself drawn to to that next object d' art. Sometimes this cramps our style in our one-bedroom condo. There just aren't enough rooms for me to display all these wonderful finds or to create all the endless vignettes I'm coming up with.

So, as it is, our living space is in constant flux. I enjoy the evolution and like to think progress is always being made. I've always envied those who find a look they love for their home and stick with it, but have recently come to terms with the fact that I too have found a look I love! My look is Veritable Variety!

Yesterday I braved the Flea Market in 100º weather and of course sales were slow and so were we. It was just soooo hot. I'm not complaining, I love this weather - if you're laying by the pool!

Last week at the flea I made this little hanger. I thought I'd share it with you. It's hanging in a little cove in our hallway and certainly serves a purpose, but I think it'll wind up in my etsy store before too long so check later this week. It is on the rustic side which is just the way I like things...

The find - not necessarily an old sign, but one I thought had potential...

I nestled it into one of my vignettes just to photograph - this before
I knew I'd be transforming it.

I'd had these handy old screw in hooks for literally years - with no use for them I was trying unsuccessfully to sell them at the flea when the idea dawned on me - duh, put them in the sign and give it a function!

It wasn't that slow at the market, but this all happened toward the end of the day and I was simply smitten with how it turned out. I came home and immediately photographed for a future blog. This makes up for the fact I didn't take any pictures at the flea market yesterday. Did I mention it was just sooo hot?

A Few Finds: Installment #1

I am intrigued with vintage advertising tins - here are just a few of my mini-tin collection. I think they say funny things on them. I found 4 while I was junking in Oregon and they were very reasonably priced!

I have a slightly Bohemian Luxe streak in me (to put it mildly). I found this dress at a local Thrift store here in LA and plan to wear it. It looks nice with chunky leather shoes (platform works nice with this look) or my Frye boots (they look good with everything - for real).
Here is a picture of the fabric up close - it is truly wonderful and inspires my art too!

Great boots I got in Oregon - I already sold them here at the Melrose Trading Post market I do every Sunday. This gives an idea of what I'll eventually have on my etsy shop
along with my artwork.

A little vignette I set up of things I thought compliment one another.
I sold the scarf and the gold clutch already.
The shoes are my own as is the tin (for now). Everything that's not screwed down around here is up for grabs though.
I'm attached to nothing except maybe my few pieces of good jewelry (wedding/ engagement rings, Hawaiian bracelets and pendants, but that's about it) and photos (the most important are all backed up on my computer - my life with "J")

This almost makes me want to bake some cookies...
...I said almost.
Wonderful 3-tier plate stand found on Fairfax just recently. I'll probably take it to the flea soon since we know I don't really bake (for fear I'd eat what I produce, just teasing).

For me the way to go where dishes are concerned, Restaurant Ware!!!
I cannot stress enough how much I love these clean, white, heavy duty plates. They just make our meals taste better (literally, they stay warm longer).
I just found these 9 additions to my already large collection at the local Out of The Closet thrift store for only $1.00 each - YES!

Theses are "Jackson" made in good ol' USofA.

Greeting Card Designs

Here are a few of my recent designs for greeting cards. The top one is for my friends birthday (now pretty late and I hope she isn't reading my blog). The bottom two are Mother's Day cards for my Mom and my Mother-in-law (who is simply the most fabulous and appreciative woman, just like her son!) I know my Mom received her package with this card so the coast is clear and I can show these off now. I just love to make home-made cards. I think taking the time and making them reflect the person you're sending to is a really special gift all on it's own.

Lately I've been into doing collage cards as well and will be sure to photograph the next batch. Usually I make the cards with a specific recipient in mind, but as the birthdays begin to pile up I realize it wouldn't be such a bad idea to make some in advance as well.

For my Bachelorette party I pulled out all the stops with hand-made invitations which I'll have to post as well... I also made a book, collage for "J" for Valentine's Day. I think it is possible I get more enjoyment out of making these creations than the people who receive them, although I hope not!

W.I.W. Reborn II

I haven't actually worn this out and about yet, but when my friend Matthew was here we found all these great outfits at a thriftstore.

I just couldn't resist these fabrics (old jersey) they feel so good and slinky on, they don't wrinkle and I got this dress, two 2-piece outfits (wait till you see those!) and some bright pink, ultra feminine pj's.

I found so many undeniably fun and unique treasures last week with Matt's visit that I'll be blogging about those "finds" for weeks to come. It was so nice to have someone to take my photo in all my new outfits too!

More Flea Market Friends, Finds and Fabulousness!

My dear friends who I share space with, Glen and Ise!

I love the age on this stand - just beautiful...

This guy (above) is always giving me neat things to make my jewelry with - so sweet, but I don't know his name!

Here is Robert (right) - he does casting from recycled bullet casings and loves rocks and fossils.

This is Manucci (below)- he sells fabulous, large pieces of furniture. He bought "J" and I margaritas a few weeks back when we saw him at "The El".

These are wonderful, 1930's perhaps, Arts and Crafts period, hand-tooled purses. I have some from my childhood that my Mom is selling in her antique mall space in Medford, Or. On my recent trip there I was a little dismayed to see they were being sold, but I'm at peace with it now!

I adore Carol, who is usually set up right across from me.
I've done yoga with her too! Those are her purses above.

This is Jose (above left) and his friend Roberto (above right)- they are funny and always happy! When "J" and I get a doggy we'll be sure to buy one of Jose's wonderful dog beds. He also sells furniture. Roberto is looking for a girlfriend, as he likes to inform me every time I see him - anyone?

I like how my friend May (absent from her space when I took this) displays her
selection of boots, clothes and bags. She is very sweet and I bought some
Gucci boots from her a while back.

I've missed seeing Bill for quite some time - but he's back and just look at the huge crowd (below) his booth drew! Everything was priced at $1.00 and I found plenty! He caters to the dealers obviously so I had no qualms about selling the purses I dug out of a huge pille at my own little space.

Here is a cute sign that I think my Grandma also had in her little shop! There is a little bit of my favorite Frye Boots from the 1970's in the mirror. These cute Norwegian girls took my picture for their soon-to-be style blog lola.no

Crazy About Organizing...

...by Color!

Is this a sign that I have way too much time on my hands? I think not. Instead, I'm hoping my wonderful 1960's clear acrylic boxes (4 total) I found (while junking with my friend Suzette on Thursday) will help remind me to wear my pretty scarves more often!

I have organized them by color and realize I have an affinity for predominantly green, orange or brown tones (they tend to look the best on my olive complexion evidently). I also have plenty of vintage 1930's (Ralph Lauren eat your heart out!) cotton bandanna's, but they stayed safely nestled in their canvas box home while the silk, satin and polyester scarves have found their new clear homes quite liberating.

Here are the results! You will note there are Vera, Paoli, Etro, Dior, Herme's and many more desirable brands or even just gorgeous hand-rolled silk scarves made in Italy and Japan.

I'm not ready to part with any of these just yet, but often times I find great scarves that just aren't my color and I take them to spruce up the look of my flea market vignette. The flea market is tomorrow so I'm spending today getting my new-found merchandised cleaned priced and neatly packed away in the car.

I'll be back tomorrow evening with hopefully good results from the market.

Slumber Party! We are Ridiculous, but....

My dear friend Matthew came up to go junking with me and spend the night with "J" and I just the other night. It inspired me to get our house looking ship-shape, thus making me feel really relaxed and thoroughly enjoying our time together.

One of our favorite activities is doing facial masks. After a full day of digging around in junk stores- one of my favorite pastimes (but definitely not Matt's - he does it just to be near me, isn't that so sweet?) we were in serious need of a deep-cleaning facial. Nothing too fancy, just an at-home mud mask. We always make sure to take our photo together while we are wearing the masks. This has been going on now for more than a decade - eeegads! We have significantly fewer wrinkles than most people our age (we wish).

What I Wore...It's BACK by popular demand!

It turns out one of my best friends' (Matthew) mom, Joan (hi sweet Joan and Jim - we'll see you in the Desert later this month) likes my "What I Wore" blogs so I thought I'd bring it back even better than before! I'm calling it W.I.W. Reborn (since I haven't done it in a while and since everything featured is used, vintage, recycled, REBORN).

Here I'm sporting a new (to me), yet very old tunic with a wonderful graphic orange, navy and white print. It is a perfect fit in the shoulders which is often times where things run too big for me. I've paired it with a wide tan leather belt that is also a thrift store find (Greedwill I believe - and no, that is not a typo, it's my new name for that profit/ not-for-profit- see a future blog for more on that...) The best part are the nice big pockets on the sides. This can also be worn as a dress and perhaps later today I'll put that look together and show you all so you can see the diversity of this great piece!

Ooops, sidetracked again. Where was I? The jeans are some I've had for about 4 years that I bought in a chic boutique in Telluride, CO. called Two Skirts (they have my jewelry, though I see they haven't put it on the website). They are Earnest Sewn and have no obvious advertising which I like. The fit is long-legged skinny which I need.

I am a boot lover of the nth degree - these are vintage, made in USA Frye's - need I say more???

My Little Working Corner

Here it is, the place where my ideas are born and where I write blog entries (though as you can see I can write from anywhere with my handy MacBook). I love this space within our living room and just to my right, beyond the couch, my husband has his tidy little set-up as well. Ever since we first started dating we have indulged in "work" dates where we get our own stuff done first then have a nice dinner, movie, outing or all of the above! I like just being in the space with my wonderful man and even though I work from home during the day, I always look forward to evenings and weekends when we share our living room/ studio.
So Rebekah thanks for the pressure - enjoy the pictures! Yes, it's always picture-perfect (not).

The New Look

Lately I've been working more and more towards non-objective, abstract expressionist art work. This is the type of work I always feel I can "live with" and that it evolves as you own it - each time you really look at a non-objective piece of art it takes on new images, shapes and conjures up new ideas. What could possibly motivate more than this type of art? Plus, it is an exciting challenge. I have found this type of work very difficult to complete contrary to most people thinking this artwork is easy to create.

I like a good challenge and love to work on multiple art projects all at once. Right now I am working on Mother's Day cards, belated birthday cards and these paintings (pictured above). I will also show images of the completed cards in tomorrows blog. Oh, I also rearranged my living room studio and it feels so fresh. I'd put a photo on, but I'm a little shy with my work space!

Low Clouds, Yoga, Farmers Market....

With any luck/time I can sort out more unnecessary items for an "Out of the Closet" drop off as well...I encourage anyone living in California to help support this wonderful organization that "is a chain of thrift stores in Northern and Southern California owned and operated by AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), the largest specialized provider of cutting-edge medicine and advocacy regardless of ability to pay." It is not only a great place to donate, but also fun to shop at in my opinion (though I do need to take a buying break after my Oregon trip).

Yesterday after finishing packing up from a successful flea market day, I had time to drop off some items I was seriously sick and tired of looking at in my repertoire... don't worry, nothing you would have wanted. I was greeted at the Fairfax "Out of the Closet" by three well-dressed, smiling men who eagerly helped me to unload items and were beyond thankful, even complementing a plant stand in the jumble I'd presented...such pleasantries are getting fewer and fewer and in order to encourage this type of helpful service I always make sure to tell a supervisor of my pleasant experience. In fact I suggest for every unsatisfied comment we make, we have to do at minimum 5 positive reinforcement comments. I think this plan will make our service industry better in time. We shouldn't be so quick to complain about bad service if we aren't being appreciative or are taking for granted good service. I see once again I've digressed. Where was I? Oh well I suppose my blogs are a little like my paintings. They start out with a hint of an idea and evolve into something clearly different from my initial intent, but far better for it! I pulled a "Goddess" card (written by Monte Farber and illustrated by Amy Zerner) that applies to my above message:

I use criticism only for making things better.
Use this gift when you are either the giver or the recipient of criticism that is meant to
tear down rather than build up.
We must be truthful with ourselves and others.
We cannot improve unless we are able to see what needs improvement.
However, when we forget to turn off our critical faculty, we become someone
who is neither happy or fun to be with.
